About Fund a Need
Each year The Board of Visitors selects an area within Children’s National that has a direct need to fund via a raise the paddle during the Live portion of our auction. Our Board will be identifying the 2018 Fund a Need at a later date.
At 2018’s event, our Fund a Need raised funds to support the 3-D Heart Model Lab – Printing Hearts for Hope
As the number one birth defect, Congenital Heart Disease affects one in every 100 babies born (or 40,000 babies annually in the US). The only one of its kind at a Washington-area hospital, the 3-D printer and 3-D modeling lab at Children’s National uses images of the heart from MRI, CT or echo to replicate the hearts of individual patients into 3-D models. These models can be printed out on the 3-D printer, or they can be displayed on a custom app. The life-sized models of patients’ hearts have proven critical for cardiac surgeons to prepare for complex heart surgery and for parents to understand their child’s unique heart defect. With your support of this program, we will push the boundaries of treatment of congenital heart defects through improvement of 3-D heart imaging and creation of 3-D heart models for patient care today, and research to improve care in the future. This unique and novel program will also contribute to empowering patients and family’s ability to visualize their own unique anatomy and empower them to be an advocate in their lifelong care. Your support helped ensure the 3-D Heart Model Lab is available to more patients and allow our team to further explore precision medicine, making treatment of heart defects more precise and less invasive.
