The Annual Grants and Major Gifts Program is the conduit through which all of The Board of Visitors funds are awarded to the hospital. As the cornerstone of the Board’s fundraising efforts, the Annual Grants program has donated more than $7 million to support initiatives that aim to help improve a child’s hospital experience, purchase critical medical equipment, sustain and develop innovative treatments and support the professional development of doctors, nurses and hospital staff.

Each fall, hospital caregivers and staff are invited to submit grant applications. Each application is carefully reviewed by The Board of Visitor’s Grants Committee and grantees are notified in early April of The Board’s decision. Funding is made available to the grantee on July 1.

Board of Visitors Grants, like Children’s National patients, are remarkably diverse. From funding for a new Clinical Simulation Laboratory and equipment for the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit to toys and fresh coats of paint to brighten patient and family gathering spaces, no grant is too big or too small for the Annual Grants Program.

Grant applicants for 2017 will be contacted and interviewed by a member of The Board of Visitors Grants Committee in February – March 2017, and grant decisions and award levels will be emailed to all participants in May 2017. If you are a doctor, nurse or staff member who has questions about the Annual Grants Program, please email
